The route

  1. T19treble 19
  2. T17treble 17
  3. D16double 16

140 needs all three darts: treble 19, treble 17, double 16.

Dartboard with the route for 140 marked

Darts in hand

  • With three darts: treble 19, treble 17, double 16.
  • With two darts 140 cannot be finished — the most you can check out in two is 110.
  • With one dart only doubles and the bull finish, and 140 is not one of them.

If the first dart misses

Hit the single 19 instead of treble 19 and you are left on 121, which you cannot finish this turn; score sensibly and come back to a double next turn.

The finishing double

The route finishes on double 16. If that dart catches the single instead, the double halves cleanly: double 8, double 4, double 2, double 1. That is why even doubles are the favourite finishes.

Other ways out

These routes add up too. Players pick between them by the trebles they trust and the double they like to finish on.

  • T18 T18 D16treble 18, treble 18, double 16
  • T20 T20 D10treble 20, treble 20, double 10
  • T20 T16 D16treble 20, treble 16, double 16
